Nexium Side Effects And Nexium Lawsuit

Nexium has many potential side effects and adverse reactions. Two of the more severe Nexium side effects are osteoporosis-related bone fractures and loss of bone density.

According to a large study of nearly 16,000 patients, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) in late 2008, patients who use proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium, for 7 or more years to treat acid reflux, peptic ulcers and other conditions are at a greater risk of osteoporosis-related bone fractures. Osteoporosis is the most common type of bone disease. Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time.

The 2008 CMAJ study specifically noted that there is an increased risk of
hip fracture after 5 years of continuous exposure and an increased risk of any bone fracture after 7 years continuous exposure.

In May 2011, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Nexium may raise the risk of bone fractures when taken for a year or more, or when it is taken in high doses. The FDA warning followed a review of two studies that were published on May 10, 2011 in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Those studies found an increase of spine, hip, and wrist fractures in patients that had taken proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium.

“Because these products are used by a great number of people, it’s important for the public to be aware of this possible increased risk,” said Dr. Joyce Korvick, deputy director for safety in the FDA’s Division of Gastroenterology Products, in an FDA press release.

Nexium is also used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid).

Nexium may also be given to prevent gastric ulcer caused by infection with helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), or by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Nexium is not for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.

Nexium Side effects

According to the Nexium patient insert provided by the AstraZeneca pharmaceutical company (parent company for Nexium) there are many Nexium side effects.
In fact, they have a very, very long list of Nexium side effects. There are long-term side effects for every part of the body.

Nexium Side Effects

 Nexium Side effects include:

  • Bone fractures –particularly osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist or spine
  • Osteoporosis
  • Bone loss
  • Back and chest pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastritis
  • Acne
  • Vitamin B-12 deficiency
  • Blurred vision
  • Migraines
  • Impotence
  • Fatigue

The FDA Report On Nexium Side Effects

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now requires that labeling for Nexium include a “black box” warning about the increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine as one of a number of possible Nexium side effects. The action follows FDA review of six studies by U.S. and Canadian researchers that link proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures in middle-aged adults.

Nexium is one of the drugs classified as PPIs which are the most powerful class of antacid drugs. Each year doctors write 113.4 million prescriptions for drugs such as Nexium.
“There is a possible increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine if you take certain drugs [Nexium] for heartburn, acid reflux, or ulcers,” the FDA warned consumers.
The greatest risk from Nexium is among people who take high doses or remain on Nexium for a year or more.

Nexium is supposed to be used only for serious conditions, but often it is taken for simple heartburn. There’s no doubt Nexium is effective, but the benefit for minor conditions may not be worth the risk of osteoporosis or bone fractures as a result of using Nexium.

Nexium Lawsuit

As a result of the FDA warning, the first lawsuit against the makers of Nexium, AstraZeneca, was filed in Houston, Texas recently. The Nexium lawsuit claims that Nexium side effects caused bone fractures and osteoporosis. According to the Nexium lawsuit, the patients taking Nexium were not warned about the potential risk of Nexium side effects such as bone fractures and osteoporosis.

It is alleged that Nexium interferes with the body’s ability to absorb calcium which can increase bone loss in a number of studies as early as 2006. The public was not made aware of this risk of Nexium side effects until the FDA released their findings in May 2010.

If you or someone you know has used Nexium and may be experiencing Nexium side effects such as osteoporosis or bone fractures, you may have a claim to recover your losses as a result of using Nexium. It is important to work with an experienced Nexium lawsuit attorney such as those at our Houston law firm of D. Miller & Associates, PLLC. Nexium

What is Nexium ?

Nexium (esomeprazole) is in a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI). PPI’s are used to treat patients that are suffering from excess acid in their stomach.

Nexium is also used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Nexium works by lessening the amount of acid produced by the stomach by blocking the acid production sites. Nexium may also help heal erosive esophagitis. Nexium is not for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.

If you have heartburn two or more times a week, you may have acid reflux disease or GERD. Anyone can have GERD, including young children.

Nexium and the FDA

Nexium is manufactured by AstraZeneca, Inc. (AstraZeneca). Nexium is the successor drug to Prilosec which is also manufactured by AstraZeneca. Nexium is AstraZeneca’s best-selling drug and is the 2nd most profitable drug in the world in 2009, according to 2009 annual sales figures, where it generated just over $5million in sales

There are many Nexium side effects and adverse reactions, including osteoporosis and bone fractures. Osteoporosis is the most common type of bone disease. Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. Researchers have estimated that about 1 out of 5 American women over the age of 50 have osteoporosis. About one half of all women over 50 will suffer a fracture of the hip, wrist, or vertebra, which are bones of the spine.

In May 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Nexium, the “purple pill”, may raise the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures when taken for a year or more or when taken in high doses. The FDA warning followed a review of two studies that were published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Those studies found an increase of spine, forearm, and wrist fractures in women that took Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI), such as Nexium. These women were 25% more likely to suffer a bone fracture over an 8 year period than woman that did not take PPIs, particularly in those above the age of 50. The FDA added a “black box” warning about the risks of osteoporosis and bone fractures on the labeling used for Nexium. The new Nexium label indicates that the fracture risks appear to be linked to long-term use. FDA officials say that although the studies have looked at people who used the drug for more than a year, the drug facts section of the labels will indicate the possibility of risk after 14 days of continuous use.

As a result of the FDA warning, Nexium side effects lawsuits have been filed on behalf of Nexium patients.
